Beyond the Score

What happens when financial systems encounter households they were not designed to see?

Beyond the Score is a Relational Systems Simulation pilot examining how banking, insurance, and verification systems interact with four culturally distinct New Zealand households under open banking, insurance withdrawal, algorithmic risk scoring, and climate-linked displacement. Every cultural, demographic, and behavioural attribute in the cases derives from a published corpus or is marked as constructed without one, and each case is published in two parts: a reading edition that carries the scene, and a trace sheet that carries the anchors, the constructed markers, and the log, so any attribute can be checked against its source.

Validation

Five Māori, Pacific and Asian young adults reviewed the cases in semi-structured interviews. Each validator assessed two cases and rated emotional realism and cultural resonance from 0 to 5. The design paired each with one case close to their own background and one further from it; in the event, one validator’s two cases both matched his descent, and another’s neither. Simulations 1 and 3 were each rated by three validators and Simulation 4 by four; Simulation 2 was not assessed. Validators from the depicted communities did not report cultural flattening. The ratings are reported in the Overview.
